Naviera Armas Trasmediterranea Ferry
Naviera Armas is one of Spain’s oldest shipping companies, founded in 1941 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. For more than eight decades, it has been a leading company in the transport of passengers, vehicles, and cargo in the Canary Islands, the Strait of Gibraltar, and the Alboran Sea, connecting the Spanish mainland with the Canary Islands, Ceuta, Melilla, and North Africa.
In 2017, Naviera Armas acquired the historic Compañía Trasmediterránea —founded in 1916 and one of the country’s oldest and most iconic shipping companies, with over a century of experience connecting the mainland with the islands and North Africa—giving rise to the Armas Trasmediterránea group. This merger brought together under a single company two of the most recognized brands in Spanish maritime transport, expanding its network of routes in the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, the Strait of Gibraltar, and the Alboran Sea.
Throughout their history, Naviera Armas and Trasmediterránea have operated an extensive network of routes: inter-island connections in the Canary Islands between Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, and La Gomera; connections between the Canary Islands and the Spanish mainland via the ports of Huelva and Cádiz; and routes across the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea, such as Almería–Melilla, Almería–Nador, and Algeciras – Tangier Med, which were in particularly high demand during Operation Paso del Estrecho and the peak summer season.
Its ships are designed for long voyages and vehicle transport, featuring cabins, lounges with armchairs, a restaurant, a café, and onboard shops, as well as accommodations for traveling with pets.
Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea’s network and assets are currently being integrated into the Baleària Group. The Canary Islands routes will now be operated under the Baleària Canarias brand, which maintains inter-island connections throughout the archipelago and routes between the Canary Islands and the mainland from Cádiz and Huelva. The Alboran Sea routes (such as Almería–Nador or the mainland–Melilla) are also being integrated into Baleària, while part of the Strait connections are being transferred to the DFDS group, which strengthens the service offerings and frequencies on these routes.
If you want to travel on the Canary Islands routes historically operated by Naviera Armas, you’ll now find them under the Baleària Canarias ferry brand, covering all connections between the islands and with the mainland.
